God's servants
Children's Activity
Object:
Teachers or Parents: As Christians, we are called by God to be
servants in the sense that we are to care about and serve others.
Jesus is our model in this as he came to earth to be a servant
and give his life for all of us. Children need to learn how to
serve others and put others first if they are to overcome their
natural inclination to be selfish and self-centered.
*Put the children into groups of four or five. Set out in
front of each group candy bars in a number that is one less than
the number in the group. Explain to them that it is up to them to
determine among themselves how the candy will be distributed.
They may decide to draw straws or use some other means of chance
to determine which one does not get a candy bar. It is hoped
that, one or more of the groups will have someone who is willing
to give up his/her claim to a candy bar so that the others will
have one. If this happens, you can talk about how this is what we
need to be willing to do if we are to follow the example of
Jesus. If it doesn't happen, you can talk about how this is what
Christians should be willing to do. When the exercise is over, be
sure you do reward any of the children who were willing to
sacrifice for the others. You might give them an even bigger
candy bar as a reward.
*Write the word "Servant" in large letters on a board or
easel. Ask the children to give you other words that come to
their mind when they see this word. List a few of the words they
think of and then add the word "Jesus" to the list. Explain to
them why Jesus is a servant and how we should try to be like him.
