God's spirit through baptism
Children's sermon
Object:
a pitcher of water
Good morning, boys and girls. Do any of you remember when you
were a very tiny baby? (Let them answer.) I can't remember back
that far. One of the things that probably happened to each of you
when you were a baby was that your parents brought you to church
and you were baptized/dedicated (use your own denomination's term
here). The minister used a little water like this (take water
from the pitcher with your hand and show them) and placed it on
your head.
Does anyone know why water is so important when someone is being baptized? (Let them answer.) I want to tell you about Jesus' baptism. When you hear my story, then you might know the answer. Jesus was getting ready to do his ministry. He knew that his cousin, John, was at the Jordan River. John was washing people who were sorry for their sins. People let John wash them to show how important God was in their lives.
When Jesus came down to the Jordan River he asked John to wash him too. He wanted everyone to know that God was important in his life and in the work he soon would do.
God showed people how important Jesus was by sending down his Spirit to give Jesus power. That's why Jesus was baptized.
