God's spokes-person
Children's sermon
Object:
a wheel with spokes (if possible)
Many times the Bible talks about the unity of our faith.
Today we read the apostle Paul who writes that there is "one
Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God...." We call that "unity."
It's all together -- ONE.
As I thought about unity, I thought about how a wheel has to be round. Yet wheels -- like bicycle wheels -- have many spokes. These wires are called "spokes" and they hold the wheel together. All of us are like the spokes. We are all different, yet we are part of something that is a unity -- one. We are all a part of God's church.
In this church we have tall people, short people, young people, old people, men, women, black people and white people. We have all different kinds of people, and yet we are one group - - together. We try to have "unity."
What would happen if some of the spokes in this wheel decided they didn't want to be a part of the wheel anymore? (Let them answer.) It would eventually make the wheel fall apart. In a similar way, each of us is important in God's church. There are no extra people or people who are not important. Just as each spoke in a wheel is important for the wheel to remain round, so each person in our church is important in keeping our church well-rounded.
That is one reason I am so glad you are here this morning. We wouldn't be the same without you. You are an important spokes-person. You help us be what God wants us to be. I'm glad for each of us here this morning and for everyone sitting in the congregation.
Dearest God: Thank you for each other and for the unity we can have as your church. Amen.
