God's will and testament

A copy of a "Last Will and Testament" and the New Testament
Good morning! Today our reading tells us that we are not slaves. What is a slave? (Let them answer.) A slave is someone who belongs to another. None of us is the property of another person. In fact, it is against the law for one person of our country to own another. But a long time ago it was not only not against the law, it was common for some people to own other people.
Our reading also tells us that we are children. Not just any children, but children of God. The word used in the reading is that we are "heir(s)" of God. An heir is someone who is related directly to a person and who gets whatever that person owns.
Today I brought with me something that most older people have. It's called a "will and testament" (or usually we just say "a will"). Older people make these up to show what the heirs get when they die. If they have a house, they will say that so and so gets the house. If they have a car, they might say that someone else gets it. When we die, nothing left is ours and it must go to someone else. A will is a way of telling who gets what.
A will is often called a "will and testament." I brought with me another "will and testament." In fact, this will and testament we usually call the "New Testament." It is God's will and tells what God gives to God's own heirs ---- you and me. The New Testament says that we get to be children of God and inheritors of eternal life.
It's really wonderful to be an heir of God, isn't it? We are not slaves who are property. God doesn't own us. We are not just any children, we are God's children! We are heirs ---- we inherit from God eternal life. It's all right here in God's will and testament ---- the New Testament.
Dear God: We thank you for making us your heirs. Amen.
