The Golden Rule
Children's Activity
Object:
Teachers or Parents: The words of Jesus in this Gospel text are
called the "Golden Rule" because of the wonderful effect such a
rule would have on all human relationships if it was practiced.
This is not a difficult concept to get children to understand,
and we should try diligently to instill an understanding of it in
our children. Let's encourage them to think about how they want
others to behave toward them and try to reciprocate that kind of
behavior.
*Write down three numbers between 1 and 100 on a piece of
paper. Have all the children guess a number and select the three
closest numbers as winners. Have the three winners sit down in
front of the group. Show these winners three candy bars and
explain that the one who was closest to a winning number has a
choice to make. The top winner can keep all three of the candy
bars or he/she can share with the other two winners. Before the
decision is made, read the Gospel text. Then let them make a
decision. It's very likely that the winner will decide to share.
If so, discuss this as an example of the Golden Rule. If not, and
this is very unlikely, discuss it as a failure to follow the
Golden Rule.
Sunday school assembly opening:
*Ask the children to name things that they have done this
week that would fit into a category of obeying the Golden Rule.
Discuss the acts that they name to show that they are or are not
good examples.
