A good foundation
Children's sermon
Object:
, a rock, a fan, and a pitcher of water
Good morning, boys and girls. How many of you have ever seen a house being built? (let them answer) It's lots of fun to watch someone dig a big hole and then pour cement to make the basement floor and walls. It is also fun to watch them build floors, walls, and a roof over the whole building.
Jesus talked about building, too. He said that if you are smart, you will build your house on something as hard as rock. Rock is a good foundation. Let me show you. (put the rock in a pan and pour water all around it and over it to show that the rock doesn't move) That rock will stand all the water you pour on it and it will make a good foundation for any building.
I also brought a fan. (demonstrate that the fan will not make the rock move) I could blow on this rock all day and it would not move. Wind will not turn the rock over so it is good to build on something like this rock.
But let's take a look at something else. Sometimes people are not careful where they build. They dig holes in sandy soil and build a house. I brought some sand. (put the sand in a container) Let's turn the fan on the sand. (be quick and don't spread too much sand) We had better not do too much or we will not have any sand left. Guess what happens when happens when we pour water on the sand. That's right; the sand begins to wash away. (demonstrate) A smart person would never build a house on sand.
What does this have to do with Jesus? Jesus says that he is a strong foundation on which to build our lives. You and I have to be built in a strong way if we are going to have a good life. Jesus teaches us the best way to live. He teaches love, forgiveness, honesty, and caring for others. He teaches how we are to praise God. Jesus is the foundation of a good life just like a rock is a strong foundation for a house.
As we go to Sunday school, we learn many things about God and Jesus that become part of that foundation. What we learn helps us live as God wants us to.
So the next time you see a rock or some sand, remember which one to build your house on, and while you are thinking about building a house remember how building our lives on Jesus is the smartest thing to do.
