Good friends
Children's sermon
Object:
a lunch pail, a football, a glass of milk, a doll
And let us consider how to provoke one another to love and good deeds, not
neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another,
and all the more as you see the Day approaching. (vv. 24-25)
Good morning, boys and girls. How many of you have friends? (let them answer) Very good, everyone has friends. How many of you have a best friend? (let them answer) When you are with your friends, what do you do? (let them answer)
Do any of you have friends at school? (let them answer) Do you have lunch together? When I was a little boy, I used to love lunchtime because I would eat lunch with my friends and then go out to the playground and play football. (show the lunch pail and the football) Do any of you do something like that at school? (let them answer)
Do your friends ever come over to your house or do you go over to your friends' houses? (let them answer) Do you have a glass of milk (show the glass of milk), play video games, or just hang around and talk? (let them answer) My sister and her friends used to play with their dolls. (show the doll) They would feed the dolls or teach the dolls like they were in school or just change their clothes. My sister used to have a very good time. Is it still the same with you girls? (let them answer)
We like to get together and enjoy each other's company. The Bible teaches us that Christians should hang out together a lot. In the times after Jesus was resurrected, the Christians used to visit each other a lot. They ate together, took walks together, and worshiped together. This is one of the reasons we meet here each Sunday morning and at other times. We want to share our lives and become very good friends. When we are together in the name of Jesus we want to do good things for other people as well. We don't just talk about the lonely; we visit them. We don't just talk about the hungry; we feed them. We don't talk about the homeless; we find them places to stay.
Christians work well together. Christians play well together, also. I hope that some of you are best friends with people here at the church. It is good to go to Sunday school and church. It is also good to visit each other in our homes and go to interesting places together.
The next time you drink a glass of milk or throw a football maybe you will remember one of your church friends and ask your mom or dad if you can invite them to come over to your house. That's what Christians do! Amen.
