Good job
Children's sermon
Object:
an award (trophy, certificate, medal)
We also constantly give thanks to God for this, that when you received the
word of God ... you accepted it. (v. 13a)
Good morning, boys and girls! How many of you have ever received an award like this? (hold up award; allow answers each time) Maybe you got a certificate, a medal, or a trophy. Why did you get it? Have you ever watched an awards show, in real life or on television? What do people do when they receive an award? You're right -- usually they make a speech. This is called their "acceptance speech," where they thank the person who gave them the award and thank the people who have helped them achieve that award. Who would you thank if you got an award? (allow answers) Maybe your family and your friends. Maybe your church family. Would you thank Jesus? (allow answers) We can do everything we can do because God gives us good gifts. So Jesus and God would be good to thank!
Our Bible verse for today is by Saint Paul. It says, "We also constantly give thanks to God for this, that when you received the word of God, you accepted it." Saint Paul is thanking people for accepting God! That would be like giving an acceptance speech for an award and then having somebody come up and say "Thank you so much for taking this award!" What do you think about that? (allow answers)
Saint Paul set a good example for us. God's word is like the best trophy ever. What would the best trophy ever look like? (allow answers) So this big, shiny (use adjectives children supply) trophy is what you get for believing in God! Awesome! When some people get a trophy, they just put it on the shelf and forget about it. It just sits there, collecting dust. Maybe eventually they just shove it in the attic and forget about it completely! If you had a big trophy that was God's word, would you hide it in your attic? (allow answers)
Well, you do have a trophy of God's word. It's not big and shiny like the one we imagined, but it's very important nonetheless. Do you know what this trophy looks like? (allow answers) It's the Bible! How many of you have a Bible at home? (allow answers) Do you hide it in your attic? (allow answers) I hope not! When we give Bibles to people, we are giving them a trophy of God's word. The best part about this trophy is that you can read it! Once we give people God's word, we have to remind them to keep using it and remind them to not let it get dusty. And when you do read your Bible and use that trophy of God's word, it's nice to have somebody like Saint Paul say, "Good job! Keep up the great work!" Amen.
