The good stuff came later!
Children's sermon
Object:
a glass of water and a glass of grape juice
Good morning! Today we are going to talk about the first
miracle Jesus performed. First of all, what is a miracle? (Let
them answer.) A miracle is something that is not usual. If I
suddenly started floating in the air, that would be something
like a miracle. Most of the time we don't go floating in the
air, do we?
The first miracle Jesus performed was at a wedding. How
many of you have been to a wedding? (Let them answer.) Are they
fun to go to? (Let them answer.) Most people would say that
weddings are happy occasions. It's fun to go to weddings and see
a man and a woman become husband and wife.
Many years ago Jesus went to a wedding in a town called
Cana. While he was there the people drank the good drink. It
was something like this good-tasting grape juice I have here this
morning. (Here, if you like, distribute the grape juice to each
of the children in small glasses.) Before long, all the good-
tasting stuff was gone. The only thing left was water.
But Jesus wanted everyone to have the good stuff, so he
changed the water into something that tasted very good to the
wedding guests. In fact, it tasted better than what the earlier
guests had drunk! It was very good and it was made out of water!
This was Jesus' very first miracle. It was a sign that
Jesus was someone very special. No one else had ever taken water
and made it into wine. If I took this water and made it into
something good, you would be impressed with me. I can't do that,
but Jesus could and did! As a result, Jesus' friends, the
disciples, started believing in him.
We can believe in Jesus as well because Jesus wants the very
best for us. He wants us to have life in all its fullness. I'm
glad we have Jesus to trust!
Dearest Lord Jesus: Thank you for giving us every good thing.
As you made a wedding long ago a happy time, so you make this day
special as well. Amen.
