"The good stuff came later!"
Children's Activity
Object:
Teachers or Parents: Jesus did not perform miracles for
proof of his divine nature. His miracles were to relieve human
suffering or, as in the case of the wedding at Cana in Galilee,
to add joy to the occasion.
* Jesus still adds joy to any occasion. Have the children
memorize John 10:10b ("I came that they may have life, and have
it abundantly").
* Have a grape-drink snack in Sunday school today.
* Examine other miracle stories in the New Testament and
make the connection between Jesus' compassion and his miraculous
abilities.
* The point of today's story in the lectionary is the
revelation Jesus' miracles provide. As the text says, "Jesus did
this, the first of his signs, in Cana of Galilee, and revealed
his glory; and his disciples believed in him" (v. 11). Explore
with your children other ways Jesus revealed his glory in what he
said and what he did.
* Many children will not have school tomorrow because of the
Martin Luther King, Jr., birthday observance. You may want to
relate his life story of Christian commitment with the civil
rights struggle.
Sunday school assembly opening:
* If possible, serve grape juice to the children this
morning.
* Sing a favorite communion hymn of your congregation.
