Grace
Children's sermon

A Christmas present
What an exciting day this is! Today is the day before
Christmas and tonight is Christmas Eve! People have different
ways of doing things. Some people open their presents on
Christmas Eve. How many of you do that? (Let them answer.) Others
open their presents on Christmas Day. Which of you will open your
presents tomorrow? (Let them answer.) Some open gifts on other
days. Would any of you like to share another time when you open
presents? (Give them the opportunity to answer.)
Why do you suppose we open gifts at this time of the year? (Let them answer.)
There may be many reasons for giving and receiving gifts at Christmas time, but the number one reason is because God has given us Jesus and Jesus is the biggest gift any of us could ever receive. God loves you and you and you and me so much that God showed that love in the baby Jesus. When Jesus was born, people had reason to believe that God really does love us. Jesus was the big gift.
When we get a nice gift, we always want to give a nice gift back to the one who gave us a nice gift in the first place. God has told us that the nicest thing we could ever do for God would be to do nice things to each other. God would like us to love each other as God has loved us. The love we have from God is called grace. Grace is a wonderful word telling us all about God and Jesus.
Let me end this children's sermon with the words that the apostle Paul used to begin his book of Romans: "Grace ... to you." What a wonderful gift! Dear God: We thank you for the gift of Jesus. We remember you when we receive nice gifts from others and when we give nice gifts. Thank you for grace. Amen.
