"Grace alone!"
Children's Activity
Object:
Teachers or Parents: Grace is difficult for even adults to
understand and yet it really is so basic that small children can
understand it. Do what you can to teach them the meaning of
grace through baptism.
* Find out the baptismal anniversaries of each of the
children. Ask each child to tell what he or she knows about the
day he or she was baptized. If the children know nothing or
little about that day, ask them to go home and ask their parents
about that day.
Parents: Share memories of the day your children were
baptized. It's their story and you do so much to make it
meaningful to them.
* Teach the children the story behind the words to the hymn
"Amazing Grace." Learn at least the first verse of this hymn.
* Ask: "Can you think of things you received by grace --
free and undeserved?" (The children can respond with ideas such
as life itself, health, home, freedom, and so forth.)
Sunday school assembly opening:
* Sing "Amazing Grace." Work it out with your
pastor/organist/worship and music committee to have the children
sing one stanza of "Amazing Grace" in worship while the adults
remain silent. The first stanza works well.
* "Jesus Loves Me" is another hymn of grace (even though it
doesn't use the word).
