The greatest gift
Children's sermon
Object:
a picture of the Christ Child wrapped as a present
Good evening! Tonight is Christmas Eve. How many of you will
be opening gifts tonight? (Let them answer.) How many will be
opening presents tomorrow? (Let them answer.) No matter when you
open presents, there is usually one present that you are hoping
for more than any other. Tell me about a present that you really
hope you will get this Christmas. (Let them tell you about a gift
or gifts that they are hoping for.)
I brought along a present tonight, and I want to tell you
that this is the greatest gift that you or anyone could possibly
get for Christmas. Does anybody have an idea of what it might be?
(Let them answer.) Okay, let's open the present and see if you
are right. (Open the present and show the picture.)
Of course, the greatest gift is the one we got at the first
Christmas, Jesus, himself. He is the reason we celebrate
Christmas. We give each other gifts to remind us of this
wonderful gift of God. Because Jesus was born, all of us can go
to Heaven. How could any gift be more important than that? (Let
them answer.)
Let's thank God for this wonderful gift.
Dear Father in Heaven: We thank You for giving all of us the
greatest gift that has ever been given. Help us to remember what
Christmas is all about when we open our presents and celebrate
Christmas tonight and tomorrow. Amen.
