The greatest gift
Children's sermon
Object:
an empty Christmas gift box
Good evening! Seems a little strange to say that when I am
usually saying good morning when you come up here. Why are we
all gathered here tonight? Is there something special about
tonight? (Let them answer.) Yes, it's Christmas Eve and tomorrow
is Christmas. What's going to happen tomorrow? Will somebody
volunteer to tell me what tomorrow will be like for you? (Let one
child tell about his or her expectations, which will probably be
focused on presents.)
That sounds like an exciting day. Presents are an important
part of Christmas, but what if every present you got was like
this one? (Show the empty gift box.) How would you feel about
that? (Let them answer.) You know, even if you got no presents,
it wouldn't change the real reason we celebrate Christmas.
Presents are only given to remind us of the one great present we
got from God on this day 2,000 years ago. Can anyone tell me what
that was? (Let them answer.) Yes, of course, God gave us the baby
Jesus on this day. Isn't that a more important present than all
the presents you will get tomorrow? (Let them answer.) It really
is, because that baby grew up to become our Savior. Without that
gift, you and I would be lost forever.
So let's not forget the real reason that we celebrate
Christmas. We are celebrating the gift God gave us. All the other
gifts we get are just a reminder of that gift, the greatest gift.
Dear God in Heaven: We thank You so much for giving us the gift
of Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord and Savior. Amen.
