Groan for God
Children's sermon

pictures of a vacation spot, an ice cream cone, and a baseball bat
Good morning, boys and girls. How many of you have hope? (let them answer) What is hope? (let them answer) I brought along some pictures today that I would like you to look at and see if these are things that you hope for. (show them the picture of the vacation resort and ask them to identify it as a vacation spot) Do you hope that you will get a vacation this summer? (let them answer)
(show them the ice cream cone and the baseball bat) Do you hope that someday you will get to eat an ice cream cone or have a new bat? (let them answer) Maybe an even better example of hope is when you wish to make a new friend, someone that you do not even know. That is hope, real hope. Perhaps you hope that you will someday go to a college that you have never heard of at this time. That is also hope.
Saint Paul talked a lot about hope. He said that sometimes we hope so badly for things that it actually makes us groan. Do you know how to groan? (let them answer) Let me hear you groan. You are a bunch of good groaners. Why does Paul think you will groan when you are hoping? (let them answer) That is pretty close. Paul says we are hoping for Jesus to come and lift away our sins. We wait, knowing that someday Jesus will come and take away our sins, but we don't know when that time is coming. That makes us groan! (ask them to groan a couple of more times) Good! People also hope that when our sins are lifted off of our bodies, we shall see heaven. That really seems like almost too much to ask Jesus. But the Bible tells us that this is good. We should hope for many things that God has to give us including the forgiveness of our sins and the hope to live eternally with God.
All I can say is WOW! What a hope for each of us. We drag around our sins and we pray that Jesus will come, but sometimes it seems like it will take a long time. Paul says, "That's okay, groan a little and you may feel better."
Do you want to groan with me? (let them answer) Do you want to hope with me that Jesus gets rid of all of our sins and invites us to live with him forever? (let them answer) Of course you do. Let me hear you groan! (lead them in some groaning) Let me see you hope! You are doing a wonderful job and I believe it is working.
