Have no fear
Children's sermon
Object:
Blindfold
Good morning! Today I need a volunteer who will let me put
this blindfold on him or her. (Do it.) I have just made (name)'s
world dark. Sometimes when it is dark, people are afraid. Why do
you suppose some people are afraid of the dark? (Let them
answer.) I think it might be because when it is dark you can't
see as well and you don't know what all is out there. I would be
especially more afraid of the dark in a strange place where I
didn't know quite what to expect.
Jesus tells his followers to not be afraid because God is on their side. We may not know what is out there, but God does and God cares about us. We call this "faith." Faith is when we trust God. By trusting God we don't have to be afraid of things we should not be afraid of.
(Take the blindfold off your volunteer.) Thank you (name) for being my volunteer today. You were brave because you didn't know what I was going to do with you. But you had faith in me that I would not hurt you, didn't you? That is another way faith works - - by knowing a person. You know me and know I would never hurt you.
When we know God we can have faith; when we have faith we know God. Faith and unnecessary fear don't go together. God loves us and is on our side. That's really good news!
