He gives us strength
Children's sermon
Object:
several pieces of different colored yarn about 18 inches long
(hold up one piece of yarn) Let's pretend that this is me. I can tie things together, I can decorate things by becoming a bow. I can be used to make a handle on something. There's a lot of stuff that I can do. I am a special piece of yarn, but there's a lot that I cannot do. Look at this. (pull the yarn between your hands and break it in half) I'm not very strong. I break easily. I can handle some jobs, but there are some jobs I just am not strong enough to take care of by myself.
Do you know what happens when I see a job that I can't handle? I pray and ask God to help me. God answers my prayer. If I am broken, he will fix me. (tie a knot in your broken pieces, making a single strand again) I ask him to give me some of his strength, and you know what? He makes me stronger. (hold up the rest of the yarn strands) Now look what happens when he shares his strength with me. (hold all the pieces together and try to break them) I really am stronger! God has given me what I need to handle the big jobs now. I'm not all alone, and I am able to do much more with his help.
Listen as I read part of today's lesson again. "But the Lord stood by me and gave me strength, so that through me the message might be fully proclaimed." There are people around me who know how weak I really am. They've seen me break before. They know what I can and cannot do. The great thing is that when they see the strength of God helping me, they learn how wonderful he is. They can see his miracles and that all my strength really comes from him.
(hold up a single strand again) Alone we are not very strong. (break the piece) When God gives us his strength, though, there is nothing that we cannot do. (hold up all the pieces and yank on them as a bunch)
Prayer: God, your strength to us is such a gift. Thank you for sharing your strength with us. Amen.
