He understands
Children's sermon

A simple test, like some of the younger children might
have had in school
Tests show us how much we know. In school we have tests so
that the teachers might know if they were successful in teaching
us what we need to learn. How many of you have had a test
something like this test? (Let them answer.)
One thing we know about tests is that they were written by people who have taken tests themselves. They know what tests are because they have taken many of them themselves. They understand tests.
Can you imagine what it would be like to take a test from someone who has never, ever taken a test before? It would be mighty strange because they would not understand what tests are designed to do.
We say that life also has many "tests." By that we mean that there are things in life that may be difficult. Have you ever fallen down? Of course we all have. We know what it means when someone says they fell down and hurt themselves. Have you ever had someone angry at you? Probably so. Have you ever done something that was very hard to do? Sure you have! We can call these things "tests."
What we know about Jesus is that he has felt the very same things we feel. He knows what it's like to fall down and feel hurt. He knows exactly what it feels like when someone gets angry at us. Jesus also did some things that were very hard for him to do. Jesus knows what it feels like when we try to do something that is quite difficult. Jesus understands because he was just like us as a human being.
It's nice to know that Jesus was like us in this way. We know that Jesus understands whatever happens to us in life because Jesus has been there -- just like the teacher who gives us a test in school understands what taking a test is like.
I'm really glad we have a Savior like Jesus who truly understands everything about us. I can trust Jesus because he understands me and knows me -- and you, too.
Dearest Lord Jesus: Thank you for helping us when we have things come up in our lives that we do not understand or that may be hurtful or that may be hard. We're so glad you understand us. Amen.
