He was transfigured
Children's sermon
Object:
A picture of a caterpillar and the resulting butterfly of
that species
How many of you saw a caterpillar last summer? (Let them
answer.) Caterpillars look a lot like worms -- for a while. But
then the caterpillars change. What do they change into? (Let them
answer.) Can you imagine that? This worm-looking creature turns
into a beautiful butterfly! God's world certainly is amazing!
Today is called "Transfiguration Sunday" and the scripture we read tells how Jesus also changed. He went up a high mountain with Peter, James, and John and suddenly his clothing became "dazzling white." What else happened there on that mountain? (Let them answer.) Moses and Elijah appeared with Jesus and talked with him. A cloud came over them and a voice came from the cloud. Then, as soon as it started, it was over. Jesus was standing there looking like his usual self!
The transfiguration of Jesus may mean many things, but one thing it certainly means is that we shall also be changed into something very different from what we are now! Like the caterpillar that changes into a lovely butterfly, we shall change from our earthly bodies into heavenly ones. Death can destroy our earthly bodies, but it cannot even come close to our heavenly ones.
After Jesus was transfigured on the mountain, he had some very hard days ahead of him. He went to Jerusalem where people made fun of him and spit on him and hurt him in many ways. Those days must have been very difficult days for our Lord, but Jesus knew those days would not last. They could do anything they wanted to his earthly body because he knew they could not touch his heavenly body that was coming.
We also know that whatever happens to us in this life will not last. Everything is changing and whatever happens to us now will someday change and no longer be happening to us. We know the love of a God who sent Jesus to show us the way. We can always know that everything will turn out fine because of God's love that was shone to us in Jesus.
Dearest Lord Jesus: We know that anything that might happen to us will be made better by you. Thank you, Lord. Amen.
