Children's sermon
Object:
medical instruments, like a stethoscope and a
thermometer
Where do you see medical objects like this? (Let them
answer.) In a doctor's office or at the nurse's office is
correct! These medical objects are found in places where medical
professionals practice medicine. They work there to help people
get well. If you are not feeling well, chances are your parents
will take you to see a doctor or a medical professional. Have
any of you been to a medical office recently? (Let them answer.)
Did you see instruments like these? (Let them answer.)
Now let me ask you a trick question. What is the name of a place that helps people get well? (Let them answer. They will likely respond, "Hospital.") That is what I would say if someone asked me that question, but the answer I have in mind is -- THE CHURCH! The church is a place that helps people get well!
Doctors, nurses, and others work in hospitals and clinics to help people get well. But the church is also a place where we help people get well.
How does the church help sick people? (Let them answer.) By praying for people. Today we read in the Bible that "the prayer of faith will save the sick." We talk to God in prayer every Sunday right here in church, asking God to heal the sick. We don't give people medicine to take or use instruments like these to help people, we use prayer. We do that because we have the promise that our prayers will help the sick.
We can say a prayer for the sick right now. Do any of you know of people who are sick? (Let them answer.) Let's pray for these people right now. (Conclude with a prayer for the sick that the children have mentioned. If they don't mention anyone, supply the names of people you know who are ill.)
