Fear seized all of them; and they glorified God, saying, "A great prophet has
risen among us!" and "God has looked favorably on his people." This word about
him spread throughout Judea ... (vv. 16-17)
Good morning, boys and girls. Does anyone here read the newspaper? (let them answer) What is in a newspaper? (let them answer) There is a lot of information in a newspaper. First, it tells us what went on in the world yesterday. Some news comes from countries far away. Some news comes from the city or town we live in. There is news about the schools. A newspaper tells you about the people that died and the babies that were born. All of the sports stories are in the newspaper. There are advertisements that tell you about the sales in the stores. A newspaper is a very powerful voice in every community.
They didn't have a newspaper in the time of Jesus. In our lesson for today, it talks about Jesus and his disciples coming to a town called Nain. Nain wasn't a big town but there were quite a few people present on the day Jesus came. He was just coming through the gates when he saw a funeral procession. The people were carrying the body of a man and Jesus could tell the man's mother was crying. It was the only son she had. Jesus felt very sorry for the woman and he told her that she could stop weeping. Then he touched the casket and asked the dead man to rise. Immediately, the man sat up and began to speak.
The crowds that were standing around could hardly believe their eyes. They began to shout praises to God and talk about Jesus as a blessing from God. "He is great," they told one another. All of the people in Nain heard about it quickly. It was a miracle that few would believe unless they had seen it with their own eyes. So many saw it and they told everyone they knew.
The Bible also tells us that within days everyone in the country heard about it. There wasn't a newspaper or television, but the people talked to each other. They told all the people about the raising of the son of the widow from the dead. The news really got around.
If Jesus raised someone from the dead in our town, how long do you think it would take for someone in China or Russia to find out? It would be everywhere. Someone in church would run home and put it on the internet. Within a couple of minutes everyone in the world that had a computer would know it.
In the time of Jesus, people just told each other about the miracle that happened in Nain and the word spread. You can be like one of the people in the Bible. When you go home tell your friends about the time Jesus raised a man from the dead in a little town named Nain. Amen.
