Heirs of God
Children's sermon
Object:
a will (yours or a blank form)
Good morning! I want to show you this legal document today.
(Show the will.) This document is called a will. When somebody
fills this out they are doing it to make sure that their property
will be given to the right people after they die. In a will, they
put down everything they own, their money, their home, and all
their valuable things and tell the court who is to get these
things after they are dead. The people who receive the property
are called heirs. (Take a few moments to explain the word, so
they won't confuse it with airs.)
Now, the Bible tells us that you and I are heirs of God. We
are His children and therefore heirs. What do you think that
means? (Let them answer.) It doesn't mean that God is going to
leave us money or property after He dies, because God will never
die. But Jesus did die on the cross, and what do you think he
left us? (Let them answer.) The most important thing he left us
is his righteousness. That's a very big word, but it simply means
that we, as his heirs, have inherited a ticket that gets us into
Heaven. Everyone who believes that Jesus died on the cross to pay
for our sins and was raised by God from the grave is an heir of
God, a child of God, and therefore entitled to live with Him
forever in Heaven.
Let's thank Jesus for making us his heirs.
Dear Jesus: We are so glad that you have made us your children
and therefore heirs, which gives us the right to enter heaven
because of all that you have done for us. Amen.
