Hen and chicks
Children's sermon
Object:
an Easter basket made up to look like a bird's nest
Have you ever seen a mother bird taking care of her nestlings?
(Let them answer.) How did the mother do it? Did she let the
little birds get under her for protection? Probably so. Chickens
are birds and the mother hen protects her chicks by putting her
wings over them. Nothing can get to the little ones this way.
They are protected from the rain, snow, hawks, or foxes.
One day Jesus told about his love for the people of Jerusalem and he compared his love for Jerusalem as being like a hen gathering her brood of chicks under her wings. Jesus knew that the people of Jerusalem would kill him, but he loved them anyway. They disobeyed him -- yet he still loved them!
Sometimes we do bad things that surely must displease Jesus, as they perhaps displease our parents, but Jesus loves us anyway. Many people would have hated those who wanted to kill them, but not Jesus. Jesus gave us a wonderful example of how to love even our enemies!
When Lent is over and Easter comes, I will look at the Easter baskets and probably think of how Jesus loved his enemies as much as a bird loves her little ones. I'm glad Jesus is like that, aren't you?
