Here I am Lord
Children's sermon
Object:
examples of trash, some empty candy wrappers
Good morning, boys and girls. (As you start your lesson, dump
the empty candy wrappers and other trash on the floor in front of
you.) Have you ever seen anyone litter in the street by dumping
trash like this? (Let them answer.) When you saw it happen did
you want to do something about it? (Let them answer.) I want to
tell you the story about a boy your age who saw some people
litter. It bothered him a lot. Let's see what he did about it.
A boy saw some of his friends playing in a field across from his house. As he crossed the street to go play with them, he saw that they had kicked over a trash container and the litter fell out onto the ground. The friends saw him coming and ran off. This upset the boy. He knew his friends were doing the wrong thing. But he didn't know what to do about it. He wanted to tell them what they did was wrong. But he was afraid they would laugh at him and wouldn't be his friends any more. He thought about it for a day. Finally, he knew that he must go to his friends and tell them that they shouldn't have dumped the trash. He did a brave and difficult thing by telling them what he thought.
This story reminds me of today's lesson. A prophet called Isaiah saw his friends around him doing things that he knew were wrong. People were doing things that God did not approve of. Someone had to tell these people that they were doing wrong. Isaiah thought about it for a long time. Then Isaiah heard the voice of the Lord. The voice said, "Whom shall I send to tell people that they are doing wrong?" When Isaiah heard the voice he answered, "Here I am; send me!" God sent Isaiah to tell the people what they were doing wrong. The people listened to Isaiah.
Remember: God calls us to follow God's lead. We all hear God's voice in different ways and answer by doing different things. This week see if you can be like Isaiah and do something for God. Perhaps you can be friendly to others or help around your house. Tell God, "Here I am, send me!"
