He's got the whole world
Children's sermon
Object:
a globe
Good morning, boys and girls. During the past couple of months we have heard about a lot of places that we did not hear much about before. I brought along a world globe so we could look at some of those places. Has anyone heard about Afghanistan? (let them answer) Let me show you where it is on the map. (show them) By the way, can anyone find the United States? (let them find it) Here is Canada and Mexico. We have also been hearing a lot about Iraq where there was a lot of fighting. How many of you have ever heard of Israel? (let them answer) Israel is where a lot of places mentioned in the Bible are and where Jesus spent most of his life. Let's find Israel.
In the Bible today we read about the time Pilate asked Jesus if he were the King of the Jews. He could have said, "Are you the King of Israel?" Israel already had a king and Pilate knew the king. His name was Herod. But Pilate asked him anyway. Jesus asked Pilate where he got his information.
Pilate said that people who had Jesus arrested and turned over to him said that he claimed to be King of the Jews. Jesus said that his "kingdom is not from this world." In other words, Jesus told Pilate that he would not find a country on the globe that is Jesus' kingdom. There is no place called Jesusland or Christland on the globe.
You won't find one place that Jesus said he was the king. But Jesus is a king. That is what God wanted him to be and that is what he is. He is not the king of one country but of heaven and earth and everything else. Pilate had a hard time understanding this. Kings are rich and they are powerful. They make war and peace. They live in palaces, more than one, and travel in very rich ways. Most kings have armies of soldiers, lots of airplanes and ships, and wear very fine clothes. Can you see Jesus dressed in a very rich robe, wearing a king's crown, and eating grapes while stretched out on a couch? (let them answer)
Instead of an ornately jewelled crown, his crown was made of thorns that made his head bleed. He was hung on a cross for our sins. He had no fancy robe. But when he died he was king of not one country but the King of kings and the King of every country and every person who lives in those countries and of all that God has made. Jesus is Christ the King.
