Hold fast to what is good
Children's sermon
Object:
a flashlight with some good batteries and some dead ones
Good morning! I have here a flashlight and some batteries
for it. (Show the flashlight and batteries.) Now, we all know
that a flashlight is no good if it doesn't have good batteries. A
dead battery will not give us any light, will it? (Let them
answer.)
So how would we go about testing these batteries to see if
they are any good? (Let them answer.) Yes, we can put the
batteries into the light and see if it works. Let's do that. (Put
the dead batteries in first.) Well, we don't have any light, so I
guess we can say that these batteries are dead. Let's try the
others. (Put the good batteries in.) Yes, those batteries are
okay. They work.
What should we do with these dead batteries? (Let them
answer.) Yes, I agree. Dead batteries are no good for anything so
we will throw them away.
God tells us that this is what we need to do with everything
in our life. We should test things and see if they are good or
bad. If we are tempted to do something that sounds like it might
be fun, we need to test it first to see if it's a good or bad
thing to do. For instance, some children might try to get you to
throw rocks at somebody's house. Now that might sound exciting,
but if we test it and think about what God would want us to do,
what will we find? (Let them answer.)
It's really not hard to test things to see if they are good
or bad. All we have to do is ask ourselves the question, "What
would Jesus want me to do?" If we do that, we will always know
what is good and what is bad, won't we? (Let them answer.)
Let's ask Jesus to help us do that.
Dear Jesus: Please help us test things to see if they are good or
bad, and lead us always to do what is good and pleasing in your
sight. Amen.
