House rules
Children's sermon
Object:
a list of house rules
Good morning, boys and girls. How many of you brushed your teeth this morning before coming to church? (let them answer) Good, who told you to brush your teeth? (let them answer) How many of you wash your hands before eating? (let them answer) Very good, your mom or your dad tells you to wash your hands. Who tells you what time to go to bed, say your prayers, and turns out the light? (let them answer) Mom and Dad!
I have a list of some rules to show you. (show them the list) I call these "House Rules," and they are very important rules because they help us get along at home. Everyone knows that they must brush their teeth, wash their hands, eat at the table, go to bed at a certain time, say their prayers, and get a good night's sleep. What happens when you don't do these things? (let them answer) People get pretty unhappy, don't they? Sometimes we end up saying things that we don't mean and sometimes we even end up crying and being sent to our room, don't we? (let them answer) But most of the time, we do what we know we are supposed to do, and when we do everything, it is wonderful. Our homes are filled with love, aren't they? (let them answer)
God has rules for his family also. What do we call God's rules? (let them answer) Very good, we call them commandments and we obey his commandments because we love God and we love being a part of his family.
God's commandments are filled with love. His commandments teach us to love our parents, to say good things about one another, and to respect each other's property and each other's body. We encourage each other to do well and to share with people who have problems and need help. God teaches us how important the truth is and how important the big family of God is to one another.
At home we have rules and those rules make our families happy. After a while no one even has to tell us to brush our teeth, tell the truth, wash our hands, eat at the table, say our prayers, and go to bed on time. We do it because we know it makes us happy and filled with love. But first we have to learn the rules. It is the same in God's family. Once we learn the commandments and understand how happy it makes everyone when we keep them, then we just keep on doing them because of the love it brings.
The next time your mom or dad asks you if you brushed your teeth or washed your hands you will know that you are being asked to follow the rules. If you do, it will help you have a happy family. If you keep God's commandments, your life will be filled with love and you will be part of God's very big and happy family.
