How will he look?
Children's sermon
Object:
two or three different stuffed animals
Good morning, boys and girls. How many of you want to see Jesus? (let them answer) Wonderful! All of you want to see Jesus. He is coming back, you know. (let them answer) We don't know when he is coming back but we know he is going to return to earth some day. Do you think you would recognize Jesus if he stopped by your house or showed up in church some Sunday? (let them answer) Tell me what you think Jesus will look like when you see him? (ask several who think they know what he will look like)
He is going to have a beard, long hair, white robe, sandals, or maybe no shoes. His eyes will be what color? (let them answer) He will have brown eyes and his hair will be dark brown or black. Anything else? (let them answer)
In the Bible, a disciple by the name of John wrote that we really don't know what he will be like when he returns. I brought along some different kinds of friends to see if you think Jesus may look like one of these. (begin to show them the teddy bear, the horse, the dog, the cat, or whatever animals you have)
Do you think Jesus could come back and look like a cat? (let them answer) How about a horse or a bear? (let them answer) Do you think Jesus would look like any of these and would you recognize him? (let them answer)
The other thing the Bible says is that whatever he looks like when he comes back, we will be just like him. This means that if he comes back like a bear we will look like bears. If he looks like an angel, we will look like angels. If Jesus chooses to come back as something we have never seen before, then we will look like something we have never seen before. Isn't that interesting? I think this means we will recognize him because we will look like him.
This makes things interesting. Will there be boys and girls or men and women? (let them answer) Will we all be a certain age, like thirty years old? (let them answer) Will we be white, black, brown, tan, or reddish? (let them answer) Will we be tall or short, thin or heavy, right handed or left handed? (let them answer)
We do not know any of these things, so it is going to be a real surprise to all of us. The only thing the Bible says is that however Jesus looks we will look like him.
When you go home today, sit down and take out a pencil and paper and draw what you think Jesus will look like when he returns to the earth. Remember, whatever he looks like we will also look like him. Amen.
