Huddling with Jesus
Children's sermon
Object:
none, but form a huddle (like a football huddle)
He came down with them and stood on a level place, with a great crowd of
his disciples and a great multitude of people from all Judea, Jerusalem, and the
coast of Tyre and Sidon. (v. 17)
Good morning, boys and girls. Today we are going to learn about the plans Jesus shared with his disciples and many other believers. Do you like to plan? (let them answer) How many of you watch or play football? (let them answer) Before every play, the team has a planning meeting. Do you know what that planning meeting looks like or what a football team calls it? (let them answer) That's right, a football team calls the planning meeting a huddle. Let's form a huddle and I'll show you what I mean about planning in a football game. (form a huddle and talk about a play using the names of the children to be the runner or the passer and the receivers and then have them break the huddle and line up facing the congregation) Isn't that fun? Just think, the players do this before every play.
Jesus came down from a high place and stood on the sand to talk to his disciples about a plan that he was going to share with them and all of the people. There was a great crowd of disciples and thousands of other people waiting to see what Jesus was going to do next. After the meeting was over, Jesus asked the people to be quiet and sit down. Finally, it was so quiet you could hear a pin drop. Jesus stepped away from the huddle and began to talk.
It was an amazing talk, different than any talk the people had ever heard before. Jesus said it was all right to be poor in this life because God was going to share his riches with the poor in the new kingdom. Jesus said the same was true for the hungry because soon they were going to have their stomachs filled with the wonderful food God was preparing for them. Jesus looked at the sad faces and saw tears running from the corners of their eyes. He promised them that in the new world they would really laugh.
Jesus knew that his disciples were hated and kept away from good places. He also knew that some of the hateful people yelled bad things at them and told lies about them because the people were his disciples. As bad as it was, Jesus told them it would be ten times better in the future. The disciples would be so happy that they would leap in the air and clap their hands with great joy.
This was the new plan that Jesus shared with everyone who called him Master. It was a great day. Jesus had a great plan and the people were thrilled that the things that seemed so bad at this time would be changed in God's kingdom.
The next time you watch a football game and you see the players go into the huddle and plan the next play, I want you to remember the day Jesus huddled with his disciples and then gave a new plan for God's kingdom. Amen.
