Children's Activity
Object:
Teachers or Parents: We can all feel so insignificant at
times. Children especially may feel very small and
insignificant. Today's lesson shows that things which appear
significant and "forever" are not. The story of the destruction
of Jerusalem by the Romans and especially the demise of the
Temple in 70 A.D. makes for fascinating study.
* Find artistic renditions of the Temple in a Bible dictionary (or many Bibles have renditions in the map section). If possible compare the Temple with today's Temple Mound -- a photograph will show how the Temple is no more and that other buildings have been constructed in its place.
* Make a scale model of the Temple using either cardboard cutouts or Styrofoam.
* Show where the Mount of Olives is in relation to the Temple. Jesus sat on the Mount of Olives and explained to the disciples how the Temple would all be destroyed.
* Jesus predicts wars and natural disasters. These may be prominent in the news. Allow the children the opportunity to express their feelings about such evil. Help them begin to see that this is nothing new, but that God's grace is stronger than any evil.
* The "Good Teasing" children's sermon could be a basis for discussion and ideas on how to "provoke" one another in positive ways. (Such a discussion would be most helpful to older pre- adolescent or adolescent children.)
Sunday school assembly opening:
* Sing "Blessed Assurance" or another hymn of our eternal welfare with God because of God's grace and love.
* Take an offering for places afflicted by disaster -- natural or human.
