Humble yourself
Children's sermon
Object:
a wash basin with water in it
Good evening! On the night before he died, Jesus took a wash
basin like this (show the basin) and he washed all of the feet of
his friends. Why do you think He did that? (Let them answer.)
In those days, people wore sandals, and as they walked
around with sandals their feet tended to get dirty. For that
reason, when a person visited anybody's home, they usually made
sure their feet got washed. Who do you think was given the job of
washing the guest's feet? Was it the master of the house, or do
you think somebody else had to do it? (Let them answer.) Yes,
this job was done by the least important person in the household,
usually a servant. Jesus was certainly not the least important
person there, so why did he do it? (Let them answer.)
He was showing his friends that they should be willing to
humble themselves and serve one another. The message he gave them
is also for us. We should not be proud, but humble. We should be
willing to help people around us in any way we can, even if the
job seems to be beneath our dignity. We don't wash each other's
feet today, but there are still a lot of ways to serve others.
Can you name some ways we can serve others? (Let them answer.)
Those are all good things to do. Let's ask God to help us to
be humble like Jesus.
Dear Father in Heaven: Please help us to follow the example of
your Son, Jesus, so that we too can humble ourselves and do
things that help other people. Amen.
