Hungry for more
Children's sermon
Object:
a box of sweet-smelling spice, such as cinnamon
Good morning! Tell me what it feels like to be hungry. (talk with the children for a few moments) What about on a holiday? Do you know that feeling when you keep smelling something cooking and your stomach is growling and you just can't wait to eat? That's really true if you are smelling something you've enjoyed before. You remember how great it was the last time and you know it's going to be the best when you finally get to enjoy it again. You begin to crave that food. You want it really badly and can't wait to have it again.
Here's a smell that always makes me think of yummy breakfast rolls. (pass the box of spice around)
Jesus wants us to crave him. In today's lesson, Jesus says that if you have "tasted" him and know that he is good, you will want more and more of him. What do you think he meant by that? (see what they think) I think it means that if you have known the true joy of being with him you will want to feel like that all the time. If you've been satisfied by him before, you will crave more of that feeling -- just like you crave a food you love.
So how can we know those good feelings? How can we know Jesus so well that we want to be with him more and more? The best way is to spend time with him. Talk to him. Ask him to come into your life and be your friend. He will answer your prayers. Nothing would make him happier than for you to be full of all the good things he has to offer.
I'll bet that once you've really known what that's like, you will be hungry for more and more of it. Once you've tasted the goodness of the Lord, it's hard to be truly satisfied by anything or anyone else. Nothing is better than the love of God.
Prayer: Jesus, help us be hungry to know more of you. Show us the goodness of your love and how satisfying you are. Amen.
