An image of God's kingdom
Children's sermon
Object:
a complicated dot-to-dot image drawn on a poster (use a photocopier to enlarge one out of a children's activity book)
Hello again! (hold up the poster) Have any of you ever drawn dot-to-dot pictures? They're fun. If it's an easy picture I can figure out what it's going to look like even before I connect the dots. Some pictures, though, like the one I have today, are much harder to see. In order to see the picture we need to look at the dots and carefully connect them together. It's only when all the dots are connected that we can begin to understand what the picture really looks like. (have the children help connect the dots on your poster) Now we have a complete picture.
In today's lesson Jesus is trying to tell some people what the kingdom of heaven is like. It was hard for him to explain it, though, because none of them had ever seen anything like it. It was also hard to explain because the kingdom is not just like one thing -- it's like many things. Five times in today's lesson Jesus says, "The kingdom of heaven is like ..." He never really tells them what heaven is, only what it's like. He says that heaven is like a mustard seed. It's like yeast. It's like a hidden treasure. It's like a valuable pearl. It's like a net full after fishing. These are five very different things, yet the kingdom of heaven is like all of them. How, I wonder?
Jesus kind of painted a dot-to-dot image for them. Jesus wanted his listeners to spend time thinking about each idea and then begin to connect the ideas together. The idea of heaven is too complicated to understand with just one picture. It's such a big idea that we can only get glimpses of what it might be like. I'll bet it's better than we can possibly imagine. All we do know for sure is that Jesus is saving a place in heaven for all those who love him. Isn't it a wonderful thing to think about?
Prayer: God, thank you for the wonderful gift of heaven. Amen.
