It gets better

cell phones (an older one and a newer one with newer features such as picture taking)
[The steward said to the bridegroom], "Everyone serves the good wine first,
and then the inferior wine after guests have become drunk. But you have kept the
good wine until now." (v. 10)
Good morning, boys and girls. I brought with me something that many people have and use all of the time. (show them the older cell phone) How many of you know what this is that I am holding in my hand? (let them answer) A telephone is right but it is not just a telephone it is a cell phone. There are no wires. I can carry it in my pocket and talk to someone while I am at a football or basketball game. Isn't this amazing? (let them answer) Does your dad have a phone like this? (let them answer) Does your mom have a phone like this? (let them answer) This is wonderful. Do any of you have a cell phone? (let them answer) You will probably have one soon.
Let me tell you something else about these phones. They just keep getting better and better. Now you can get a phone that can take pictures like a camera. Did you know about those kinds of phones? (let them answer, then show the newer cell phone, take a picture, and show it to them) And you can do many other amazing things with the new phones. The first cell phones were big and mainly for your car because they had to be plugged in. Things have changed, the phones are small and you can use them anywhere.
The reason I am telling you about phones is because Jesus had something happen to him when he took his disciples to a wedding. They were guests at the wedding. The wedding was beautiful and after it was over they had a big wedding reception. I don't know what happened, but it wasn't too long before the people in charge ran out of wine. This was going to be very embarrassing to the bride and bridegroom and their parents. Mary came over and asked Jesus to do something before the wedding guests noticed. Jesus' disciples filled big water jugs with water and then gave them to the people in charge of the reception. When they began to pour the water jugs into pitchers and then into glasses, they noticed something very different. It wasn't water, it was wine, and the new wine was much better than the wine that was served first. It was a miracle. Whenever Jesus touches something, he makes it better.
We have old cell phones that were wonderful when they were first made but now the new cell phones are so much better. The cell phones will keep getting better. The same thing is true with Jesus. Whenever Jesus touches something, he makes it better than it was before. The next time you see a cell phone I hope you will think of the time Jesus turned water into the best wine anyone had ever tasted. Amen.
