It's smart to love God
Children's sermon
Object:
a variety of books: some medical, financial, legal, a dictionary, and an encyclopedia
Good morning, boys and girls. I want to ask you a question. Is there anyone here who thinks that he/she is as smart as God? (let them answer) No one here thinks they are as intelligent as God. Kind of disappointing, isn't it? How many of you think your mom or dad is as smart as God? (let them answer) You don't think your mom or dad is as smart as God either? Do you suppose if we added up everything that everyone who is attending church today knows and put it all together that we would be as smart as God? (let them answer) You don't think all of us together are as smart as God. Let's ask one more question. What if we took all of the teachers and professors in the whole world and put them together in the same building. Would they be as smart as God? (let them answer) You don't think so.
I think we'd better get busy, don't you? I brought along some books that I would like to have you read this week. I need some volunteers. I have a book on medicine. Who would like to read it? (see if anyone volunteers) Then I have this big one that lawyers read, and I also have one that our banker keeps on his bookshelf. Has anyone ever read the dictionary? Would someone like to read this one while someone else reads my encyclopedia? Now if we read all of these books this week, we should be as smart as God is, don't you think? (let them answer) You don't think so.
Guess what? You are right. But you know God isn't really worried about how smart you are. God isn't giving tests. He doesn't ask us to know everything about medicine, law, banking, or anything. What God really wants us to do is believe that Jesus died for our sins so that we can join God in living a good life.
It is good to learn and to learn as many things as we can. God has given us a brain and a curiosity so that we want to know more about the world in which we live. But God also gave us a spirit so that we could be like him. The problem is that some people believe that being real smart will fix everything. But there is something called sin that gets in the way and keeps us from really knowing God.
The secret to a good life is this: Believe that Jesus came and died for our sins. When we believe that Jesus is our savior, then our sin goes away and we live a good life with God. It is easy, so simple that sometimes we try to make it more difficult.
So the Bible teaches us that it is not how much we know but how much we love Jesus and believe in him that makes the difference. The next time you see a big book you can remember that God isn't giving tests on how much we know but instead that he shared his love with us in Jesus.
