Jack-in-the-box
Children's Activity
Object:
Teachers or Parents: Today's children's sermon is an exercise
in listening. Children, like most of us, do not listen well. They
expect the Jack to pop up and it does not just as the disciples
expected Jesus to stay dead and he did not. You can try other
little listening games to show how important it is to listen to
what is really being said.
Here's a listening game: What is a funny story called? (Answer: a joke.) What do animal keepers put around the necks of oxen? (Answer: a yoke.) What do you call a quick jab? (Answer: a poke.) What is the white of an egg called? (Answer: albumen.) If you ask the questions fast enough, most people will answer the last one with "yolk" which is, of course, wrong. The key is in listening.
Emphasize to the children the importance of listening to the Easter story today.
