Jesus' birth certificate
Children's sermon
Object:
a birth certificate
Good morning! Does anyone know what this is? (Show the birth
certificate.) This is a birth certificate. When a baby is born,
the government issues this kind of a certificate to establish
that the person was born on a certain date, who the parents are,
and so forth. It can be very important to have a birth
certificate when you need a passport, enter the military service,
or any number of events where you have to prove where and when
you were born. Have any of you seen your own birth certificate?
(Let them answer.)
When Jesus was born, they didn't have birth certificates,
but let's pretend that they did. Let me ask you some questions
about Jesus' birth certificate. What's the date of his birth?
(Let them answer.) Well, we do celebrate his birthday on December
25, but we don't really know the exact date. If he had a birth
certificate, we could find that out. Okay, how about this
question: Who would be shown as his mother on the certificate?
(Let them answer.) Yes, his mother was Mary, and do you know
what? This is a special Sunday for Mary who was the mother of
Jesus. We give her special honor on this day.
What else might be on his birth certificate? (Let them
answer.) Well, what about his father? Who would be shown as his
father on the certificate? (Let them answer.) Joseph might be
listed as his father because he was Mary's husband, but who was
really the father of Jesus? (Let them answer.) Yes, his real
father was God. Jesus is the Son of God. It probably wouldn't say
that on his birth certificate, but we know that it is true.
Since this is a special Sunday for Mary, the mother of
Jesus, let's thank God for her.
Dear Father in Heaven: We thank You for your special blessing on
Mary who was the mother of Jesus. We know that she was a good
mother for him and a fine example for all of us. Amen.
