Jesus can set you free

Today's reading is about a woman who is healed by Jesus. In Luke 13:11 (NIV) the verse says, "And a woman was there who had been crippled by a spirit for eighteen years...." She couldn't stand completely straight. We don't know the full extent of her problem other than the fact that she had been plagued by this for eighteen years. Regardless of the specifics, Jesus heals her and says that she has been set free.
That's an interesting way to view her situation. It's as if she was more than just plagued; she was being held prisoner by her problem. She was a captive and Jesus freed her. The problem was bad enough physically. To Jesus it was even worse, because it limited her in all kinds of ways.
With your children, make a paper airplane and set it on a table. Don't throw it yet. What is a paper airplane meant to do? It was built to fly, but it's not doing that when it just sits on a table. It was created to do something amazing, but it is limited at the moment and unable to live into the fullness of what it can be. Now set it free. Throw it and see what it was made to do. Isn't that better? It's no fun to see a paper airplane just sitting around. It's much more fun to play with it and see it soar.
We were made to be free too, but all kinds of things limit us. It's important to see that the limitations can hold us captive and prevent us from being who we were made to be. In Christ we can experience the fullness of life, but we need his help. The woman in the lesson could not experience freedom without Jesus. Neither can we. Ask Jesus to help you experience the freedom that is waiting for you. Jesus can help you get off the table and fly higher than you could ever imagine.
