Jesus, the forgiving teacher
Children's sermon

a picture of Jesus on the cross
We've spent the last few weeks talking about Jesus the teacher. We've learned that he was a great teacher. He was patient. He was honest. Today we're going to see that he was a forgiving teacher.
Today's reading is about the day Jesus was crucified. So many bad things happened to him when he was crucified. People whipped him and beat him. They hung him on the cross by hammering nails through his hands and feet. The soldiers took Jesus' clothes and left him on the cross naked and thirsty. A lot of very mean things were done to Jesus, all because some people didn't like the things he taught.
While Jesus was hanging on the cross he prayed to his Father. He could have asked God to hurt the people who had hurt him. He could have asked God to take him off the cross and heal him. Instead, he prayed that God would forgive the people who had hurt him. Can you believe that? After all the cruel, terrible things they had done, Jesus still wanted God to forgive the people who hurt him.
Of all the things he taught, forgiveness was one of Jesus' biggest lessons. Jesus, the forgiving teacher, taught us to forgive others and pray for people who are mean to us. Even at the most painful moment in his life, Jesus had nothing but love for his enemies. I think that's incredible. How could he have that much love? How could he be that forgiving?
He could do it because God gave him the strength. God is so much more powerful than we are. He is able to help us be better than we could be by ourselves. We alone are not strong enough to love in such an incredibly forgiving way, but God can help us. When we put God first in our lives we become better people. We become more like him. On the cross, Jesus showed us just how big God's love can be.
Prayer: God, your love is amazing. It's incredible that Jesus could forgive the people who hurt him so much. If he can, perhaps we can learn to be forgiving people too. Please help us learn from everything he taught us. Amen.
