Jesus' forty-day fast in the wilderness
Children's sermon
Object:
a pitcher of water and two posters showing two days of food based upon calorie counts of 1,200 and 2,500 (include the five food groups for each day)
Good morning, boys and girls! How many of you have ever met the devil face to face? (let them answer) He is real bad and to be in the same area would be frightening.
Well, one day, the Spirit took Jesus to a place where one lived. This was a rocky desert where not much grew. Jesus planned to not eat for forty days. How hungry do you think you would be if you did not eat for forty days? (let them answer)
I have two posters showing how much you eat in a day's time. First, I am going to show you a day of plentiful eating. (describe the 2,500-calorie day poster) I think you would be full if you ate everything that I have shown you. How many of you could eat this much? (let them answer)
Now here is another day of our eating. (describe the 1,200-calorie day poster) This is only 1,200 calories. How many of you would like this day's food better than the first? (let them answer)
But let me show you what Jesus ate for forty days. (bring out the pitcher of water) This is it. Jesus drank water everyday for forty days and ate nothing else. This is a long fast but Jesus wanted his body to be pure when he faced the devil. The devil tempted Jesus three times. He offered him bread, and Jesus said, "No." He offered Jesus great recognition so that everyone would know who he was, but Jesus said no. Finally, the devil offered him all the nations in the world if Jesus would only recognize the devil's leadership. Jesus said no a third time. Jesus would not allow the devil to enter his life. Instead, with his firm body and mind, Jesus looked toward God to lead him in his ministry.
The strength of Jesus was so great that even when his body was famished from eating no food for forty days he was still not going to give into the devil.
Most of us like to eat, sometimes more than is good for us. We eat even when we are not hungry because the food tastes so good and it makes us happy. But when Jesus knew he was going to face the devil, he prepared himself by not eating and by prayer. Jesus felt so strong that even when the devil offered him everything the rest of the world would want to be well fed, to be very important or rich, Jesus refused.
Today, when you sit down to eat your dinner I want you to think of Jesus out in the wilderness and fasting for forty days so that he could defeat the devil.
