Jesus, the great teacher
Children's sermon
Object:
a Bible
(hold up your Bible) This is my Bible. It's the most important book Christians have. We've talked about the Bible before during our time together. You know what it is, right? It's a collection of stories of God's people. It's part history book and partly a book of how to live. It contains many examples of how God has worked to change people's lives.
There are two parts of the Bible: the Old Testament and the New Testament. The New Testament has all the stories about Jesus. Everything in the New Testament talks about what happened after Jesus came into the world.
Jesus was one of the greatest teachers the world has ever known. For the next four Sundays we are going to talk about what kind of teacher Jesus was. Jesus is God's son. No one has ever known God's ways better than he does.
In the Bible, it seems that Jesus was always taking time to teach people about God and help them understand the way to live and love each other better. Today's lesson is one of those times. Today's lesson is about the Sermon on the Mount. It was one of Jesus' most famous teaching moments. Every day people followed him around and asked him to teach and heal them. The day he gave the Sermon on the Mount was another one of those days. The people wanted to hear Jesus talk about God and how they should live. This is what he said. (read verses 20-31)
Pretty good stuff. Did you hear the last verse? (read verse 31 again) You've heard that before. What's that called? (see if they know) It's called The Golden Rule. It's an important thing Jesus taught people. The New Testament is full of important things that Jesus taught.
Throughout the years people have been reading the Bible and telling each other the stories of God. That's why we do what we do during this time together. We get together each week to learn more about the Bible and what God has to say about our lives. Jesus was a great teacher, and his stories are still teaching us 2,000 years later.
Prayer: God, you sent your Son Jesus to show us the way to live. He has taught us so much about you and how we should be to one another. Thank you for giving us such a wonderful teacher. Amen.
