Jesus, the great teacher
Children's Activity
Object:
For the next four weeks we will be studying about Jesus and what a great teacher he was. He was patient. He was honest. He was forgiving. Every situation was an opportunity for him to teach about God and his kingdom. He wanted people to know the best ways to live. Today's lesson is one of the most familiar of all his teachings, called the Sermon on the Mount. "Blessed are the poor ..." (v. 20). "If anyone strikes you on the cheek, offer the other ..." (v. 29). "Do unto others as you would have them do to you" (v. 31). These are some of his most quoted teachings.
There's a reason these sayings are so often quoted. They're good, and they have real meaning. This week, talk with your children about the Bible and why it's so important. Look up today's passage and talk about it. What is Jesus saying? What do these verses mean to us today? Find out together why the Sermon on the Mount is one of Jesus' most famous lessons. Here are a few thoughts to get your discussion started:
(Verses 20 & 24) The poor inherit the kingdom of God, but the rich have their consolation now. What does that mean?
(Verses 21 & 25) Do you think the hungry will just be filled with food?
(Verse 27) Why should we love our enemies? How do we do good to those who hate us?
(Verse 29) What does it mean to "offer the other cheek"?
(Verse 31) Why does Jesus tell us to "do unto others" what we would have them do unto us? What does that really mean?
