After Jesus had spoken these words, he went out with his disciples across the
Kidron valley to a place where there was a garden, which he and his disciples
entered. Now Judas, who betrayed him, also knew the place, because Jesus often
met there with his disciples. (vv. 1-2)
Good evening, boys and girls. How many of you know the Christian name for today? (let them answer) That's right, it is Good Friday. This is the day that Jesus died for our sins. Amazing, isn't it?
It all began on a Thursday night when Jesus led his disciples to a place where they often went. It was a beautiful garden on the side of a hill, with olive trees, big rocks, some paths, and trees. Jesus and his disciples went there often to pray and talk. It was their hangout when they were in Jerusalem. How many of you have a hangout? (let them answer) Do any of you have a clubhouse or a fort? (let them answer) When I was growing up, we had a clubhouse in my neighbor's yard. It was only special to us. At home, I used a very large box with some windows cut out and a blanket for a door. Those hangouts were secret.
Jesus used the Garden of Gethsemane as a secret meeting place where he and his disciples could go at night and be alone. Judas, who was one the disciples, knew where Jesus went. Judas had worked out a deal with people who wanted to kill Jesus. They paid Judas thirty pieces of silver to show them where they could find Jesus without a lot of other people around. While Jesus prayed in the garden and the disciples slept in their favorite places in the garden, the soldiers came. The hangout was no longer a secret. Led by Judas, the soldiers surrounded the disciples and arrested them. Jesus asked the soldiers why they had come for him there. When every day he was in the temple and walking the streets. They could have easily found him there. Judas, being the traitor that he was, came up to Jesus and kissed him on the cheek so that the soldiers would know who Jesus was. Jesus did not fight them. He asked his disciples to stand back. Peter, who was angry, picked up a sword and cut off the ear of one of the soldiers. Jesus healed the soldier and then asked all of the soldiers to let his disciples go. He was the only one that they really wanted. Jesus was taken prisoner. We all know that on Good Friday, some very jealous men crucified Jesus on a cross.
The next time you go into your clubhouse or hangout, I want you to remember the Garden of Gethsemane where Jesus and his disciples often went and where one night Jesus was captured. Amen.
