Jesus the head
Children's sermon
Object:
an old doll -- perhaps one that has the head missing
What would you think of a doll that didn't have a head?
(Let them answer.) Would you play with a doll like this much?
(Let them answer.) I doubt it. Dolls should have their heads --
just like people must have their heads. The head is an important
part of our bodies. We couldn't live without our heads. We
could live without our feet or hands or legs or arms, but we
absolutely must have our heads.
Today we learn that the church also has a head. Can you tell me the head of the church? (Let them answer.) Jesus is the head of the church. Any church that does not realize that Jesus is its head is like this headless doll. It is not a real church. The real church operates with Jesus as the head.
Just how do you think Jesus operates as the head of the church? Please share with me your thoughts. (Let them answer.)
Let's look at it another way. Jesus is our boss. If we had a job and were paid for what we did, we would probably have someone who is our boss. The boss makes the decisions about what should be done and when and where and how. This boss is in charge.
In the same way, Jesus is our boss here at this church. We do things that Jesus wants us to do -- at least we try to.
Dearest Lord Jesus: Thank you for taking charge and for being the head and boss of the church. Amen.
