Jesus: our once for all
Children's sermon
Object:
a golf ball
Suggestion: If there is a golfer in the congregation, suggest
that person give this lesson; better still, a golfer who has shot
a hole-in-one.
Good morning, boys and girls. How many of you know what this
is (show your golf ball)? This is a golf ball. Do any of your
parents or brothers or sisters play golf? (Let them answer.)
There is one very interesting thing about golf that I want you to
know about. One of the best things that can happen to a golfer is
to shoot a hole-in-one. If that ever happens it is very rare. It
is so rare that for some golfers it never happens. For others it
may only happen once in a lifetime. When you play golf you take
this ball and a golf club. You hit the ball with the club and try
to get the ball into a hole. Some of you may have played Putt-
Putt golf, so you know how difficult it is to hit the ball into
the hole. A hole-in-one is when a golfer hits the golf ball and
it lands in the hole on only one shot. It would almost be like
playing your favorite game and winning the first time it was your
turn. That wouldn't happen very often, would it? When a golfer
hits a hole-in-one he is very happy.
Golfing and holes-in-one make me think of this morning's lesson. The lesson says that Jesus came to earth as a very important person. It says that Jesus entered once and for all into the Holy Place. That means that Jesus did something very wonderful for us. It was a one-time only experience. In a way, it was like hitting a hole-in-one. Jesus' one-time experience was this: He sacrificed himself on the cross for all people who believe in him. He sacrificed himself for you and for me. He did this out of love for us.
Here's what I want you to remember. When Jesus died on the cross it was a one-time experience. It will never happen again. Jesus did this for us because he loves us. He did it so that we too can be with him. The next time someone in your family or a friend plays golf, remember that a hole-in-one may only happen one time. Remember too that Jesus' experience on the cross was "once for all." Jesus did this because he loves us.
