Jesus, our Savior
Children's sermon
Object:
an antacid tablet, a glass of water, some peanut butter
spread on a cracker
Good morning. How many of you have eaten something that made
your tummy ache? (Let them answer.) I have done that. If the food
I ate was a certain kind of food, the acid in the food is what
made my stomach ache. One of the best things to do to feel better
is to take what is called an antacid. Many times an antacid
tablet makes one's tummy feel better. Have you ever eaten
anything that tasted terrible? (Let them answer. If you feel like
taking the risk, you can expand on this question by asking just
what they ate.) When I eat something that leaves a bad taste in
my mouth, I drink water. Often the water helps remove the bad
taste.
Every so often people will eat something that maybe tastes good and does not upset their stomachs, but it does something that could be worse -- it could cause a person to choke. (Show the cracker and peanut butter.) It could be something like this. You could accidentally choke on something like a cracker and peanut butter. If you choke on something, do you need an antacid tablet? (Let them answer.) Do you need a glass of water? (Let them answer.) What do you need if you are choking and can't breathe? (Let them answer.) You need help and you need it soon because it is possible to choke to death. What you may need is a procedure called the Heimlich maneuver. In other words, you need someone to do something to you so that you can breathe again.
In today's reading we hear the story of Peter who was about to drown. Did Peter need a story told to him? (Let them answer.) Did Peter need a drink of water? (Let them answer.) What did Peter need? (Let them answer.) He needed a savior -- someone who could keep him from drowning. Jesus reached out his hand and saved Peter.
There are many things that might make us feel better -- such as an antacid tablet or a drink of water, or a story. But there is one thing we all need, and that is we all need a Savior. We need someone who will take us to heaven since we cannot get to heaven by ourselves. Jesus is our Savior who reaches out his hand to us just as he did to Peter a long time ago. Jesus wants every one of us to live! Jesus wants every one of us to have eternal life. I'm glad we know our Savior Jesus!
Dear Savior: Thank you for rescuing us from sin and death and giving us heaven. Amen.
