Jesus is like sugar
Children's sermon
Object:
some lemons, pre-cut in half, a squeezer, some sugar, a pitcher with water, and small drinking cups (you may want to prepare it in steps beforehand so that things move along)
Consequently he is able for all time to save those who approach God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them. (v. 25)
Good morning, boys and girls. How many of you have ever made lemonade from scratch? (let them answer) No cans of lemonade, no packages of lemonade, but to make it from real lemons. Has anyone made this kind of lemonade? (let them answer) I have made some real lemonade and in a moment I am going to let you taste it.
First I have to cut the lemons in half, like this. (show the lemons) Then I have to squeeze them in this lemon squeezer. Very good! I then pour the juice of the lemons into this pitcher. How many of you would like to try my lemonade? I have poured some cups beforehand so that everyone can taste it. (pass out the cups) What's the matter, don't you like it? (let them answer) Oh, I know what is wrong. I forgot something very important. Does anyone know what I forgot? (let them answer) That's right, I forgot the sugar. You have to have sugar if you are going to have good lemonade. (pour some sugar into the pitcher) Very good, and now how many of you would like to try some lemonade with lemons and sugar? (let them answer) You are going to love it. (again, give them cups of lemonade that have been prepared ahead of time) This is much better, isn't it? Lemons are good but if you add sugar it is even better. Now we have real lemonade.
Jesus is like the sugar. Jesus makes things better. When we have a problem, we take it to Jesus and he helps us solve it. When we have really been bad and have caused ourselves a lot of trouble we take it to Jesus and Jesus takes it to God. God gives Jesus the power to forgive our sins and make us good again. Jesus is like the sugar. Our sins our like the lemon. We take the lemon juice or our sins to Jesus. Jesus shares them with God. God gives Jesus the power to add the sugar or the forgiveness and share it with us. Now we have perfect lemonade or people who are forgiven. Jesus is our intercessor. Can you say that word, "intercessor"? (let them say it) It means to come in between two other things. In the case of lemonade, the sugar is the intercessor. It comes in between the lemons and the lemonade. In the case of being forgiven it is Jesus, who is the intercessor. He comes in between our sin and God the Father and asks God to forgive us. God gives Jesus the power to forgive sin and make us clean again. Amen.
