Jesus, the true vine
Children's sermon
Object:
two vines, one healthy and one with dead branches
Good morning, boys and girls. I brought two vines with me this
morning. If you were one of these vines, which would you like to
be? (Hold up the two vines and let them answer.) This branch is
healthy and looks alive. (Hold up the healthy vine.) This vine is
dead. (Hold up the dead vine.)
For this healthy vine to grow it takes plenty of sunshine, water, and trimming off dead spots. The dead vine stopped growing because it didn't have sunshine and water.
Did you know that Jesus called himself a vine? Why do you suppose he called himself a vine? (Let them answer.) He told his disciples that he is the true vine. God is the vinedresser. That's the person who takes care of the vine. The branches (point to the branches) of the vine are believers -- like you and me. The fruit of the vine (point to the buds or fruit) is the good work that all of us do.
When someone is separated from Jesus that person is like a dead vine. However, when someone is connected to Jesus good thing happen to that person. Jesus wants us to be a part of the true vine. Jesus wants us to follow him. He wants us to be kind to other people. When we do that our vine grows and bears good fruit. This week I want you to look at things that are growing outside. You will find vines, trees and some things growing in gardens. Remember that Christians are all part of the vine that is connected to Jesus. Remember that Jesus is the true vine. We are part of his branches. When we do things he wants us to do, our vine bears good fruit.
