Jesus the Vine
Children's sermon
Object:
a vine house plant
Good morning! Jesus once said that he is a "vine." I
brought a vine along today to help us understand what he meant
when he said that. How is Jesus like a vine? (Let them answer.)
A vine gives life to the leaves of a plant. It's how the leaves
get the food they need to stay alive.
(Pick a leaf from the vine.) Do you think this leaf will stay green now that I have picked it? (Let them answer.) It will not. It will die because it is not attached to the vine. The vine gives the leaf life.
In the same way, we are connected to Jesus like leaves to a vine and Jesus gives us life! It is through Jesus that we have life.
One of the ways we stay connected to Jesus is through Sunday school and church. That's why I'm really glad you are here this morning! Can you think of other ways we stay connected to the Vine, Jesus? (Let them answer. Here they may mention "prayer," "Bible reading," and so forth.) All of these are ways to stay connected to our Vine, Jesus. Jesus gives us life.
Let's make ourselves into a vine this morning by joining our hands to one another like a vine. (Have each of the children join hands with one another and you also. Conclude with prayer.)
Dearest Lord Jesus: You are the true Vine which gives us life. We are connected with each other like leaves on a plant. Thank you for each person here today. Amen.
