Jesus the Vine
Children's Activity
Object:
Teachers or Parents: Jesus is our vine and we are all
connected to one another through him. He gives us spiritual
life. Sunday school and worship are important ways to stay
connected to that life-giving Vine.
* If possible, plant, as a Sunday school, a grape vine on the church grounds. (Caution: grape vines need support and heavy pruning every winter. They can overrun other plants. Be sure you have the support of your church property committee before doing anything.)
* If you plant a vine (it doesn't have to be grape), make a plaque quoting today's verse: "I am the true vine...." Place the plaque in the ground or on a wall or trellis so that others can see it. Make it solid and coat it with a weatherproof plastic coating.
* This fall, when the grapes become ripe, make grape juice for the class from the grapes the class might pick. * If there are Sunday church school students who are no longer active, make some "we missed you" cards that might be sent to them.
* Today our Jewish neighbors celebrate the sixth day of their most holy day, Passover. Show through a family-tree type graph how the Christian church has its roots in Judaism and how the Passover was a prelude to our Lord's Holy Communion.
* The Orthodox branch of Christendom celebrates Easter today -- almost a month after our celebration. Show through a graph the conectedness we have with this branch of Christendom.
Sunday school assembly opening:
* There are several hymns titled "The Vine" (Wells), "He is the Vine" (Unknown), "I am the Vine" (Ylvisaker), "I'm just a Branch" (Kalb, Buddy) which might be appropriate.
* Begin and end the service with each person holding hands so that the entire assembly is connected like a vine. Say an appropriate prayer incorporating connectedness to Jesus and one another.
